Alternative health therapy is often used instead of conventional treatment. Integrated therapies use a combination of either alternative or complementary therapies with normal medical treatment, for the practice of which a high level of expertise is required. Some healing techniques that conventional medicine does not have is present in alternative therapies. When we talk of alternative therapies, they could include a whole lot of healing techniques like naturopathy, homeopathy, massages, faith healing, etc. Some diseases might warrant alternative methods of healing rather than the conventional and more and more people seem to be becoming aware of this.

Alternative health therapies can help you feel better and improve your quality of life and improve your general health to give you a sense of control. One feels calmer when pressure, stress, insomnia, nervousness and despair are reduced. Alternative therapies have been known to aid in reducing cancer symptoms like pain, nausea, breathlessness, diarrhea, constipation, poor appetite and tiredness.

A combination of alternative health therapies and conventional medicine has been noticed to be very effective in masking pain, even when there is a serious condition. Cancer support groups, some hospitals and hospices provide this type of therapy as part of overall care for cancer, cancer treatments like chemotherapy, radiotherapy etc. Many people with cancer now use these therapies to help support themselves through cancer and its treatment. They should be considered only as a support factor which identifies the various spiritual and emotional aspects along with the physical aspects.

Today, the market for alternative health products, vitamins and herbs is a billion dollar business in the United States. The recent studies that were conducted by Phillips, Tindle, Eisenberg and Davis, reflected that there was roughly seventy two million adults within the United States that use alternative and complementary therapies. Herman, Craig, & Caspi in the year 2005 have shown that more than billion annually is spent on alternative therapies.

It is very essential to find out which alternative treatment is required by your particular type of problem, how comfortable are you with it and how effective will it be. Individual therapies like reiki and reflexology, homeopathy, hypnotherapy, massage, meditation, acupuncture and aromatherapy have proved beneficial. Before you consider any of the alternative therapies that are available, it is always a very good idea to consult with your physician, it is also important that you double check that any treatment that you take in addition isn’t going to adversely affect any of the current treatment programs that you are on.

You should certainly consider discussing with your physician or the health teams before you decide to integrate any of the alternative therapies with your existing list of treatment programs. You could even find out from your physician if he is qualified to practice any of these therapies. Perhaps they may be able to recommend particular therapies or practitioners as more doctors are being convinced that complementary medicine does have a place in today’s society. For some people, these types of therapies are helpful in coping with effects of conventional treatments, reducing anxiety and giving them back some control over their lives.
